With the growing trend of re-releases performing exceptionally well in theatres, the demand for old blockbusters has surged. Riding on this wave, Superstar Mahesh Babu’s iconic film Pokiri was planned for a grand re-release in May.
Mahesh Babu’s films have consistently seen strong responses during re-releases, leading to high demand for Pokiri’s rights. Director Puri Jagannadh holds the rights to the film, and reports suggest that a US-based party acquired the overseas rights for a hefty price. Meanwhile, domestic deals had already begun progressing.
However, the re-release has now been halted, with Athidi stepping in for release during the same period.
The sudden halt is reportedly linked to financial issues surrounding Liger. Puri Jagannadh still has pending dues to distributors. Although he cleared a portion during Double iSmart and promised to settle the remaining amount post-release, the commitment was not fulfilled.
As a result, a group of distributors, led by Suniel Narang, have decided to block the release of any of Puri Jagannadh’s films until all dues are cleared. This decision has directly impacted Pokiri’s re-release as well.
Adding to the complications, the overseas buyer has reportedly been trying to reach out to Charmme Kaur, but she is said to be unavailable.
With this situation unfolding, it remains to be seen how it will affect Puri Jagannadh’s upcoming project Slumdog, starring Vijay Sethupathi.
