Political Tug-of-War: TDP Reverses YSRCP’s Renaming of Key Irrigation Projects

Share

The political rivalry between the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) has once again come to the forefront, with the TDP cadre recently accusing the YSRCP leadership of engaging in a series of controversial renaming practices during the tenure of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. According to TDP supporters, the YSRCP government in Andhra Pradesh spent significant political capital on rebranding and renaming existing irrigation projects and schemes, many of which had been established during the previous administration. The practice has led to a significant backlash from the opposition, which views it as a self-serving political move rather than an act of genuine developmental effort.

Over the course of its five-year term, the YSRCP government renamed multiple key projects, most notably, the Godavari-Penna Rivers interlinking phase-1 scheme, which was rechristened as the YSRCP DMP (YSR Palnadu Drought Mitigation Project). Other notable projects renamed during this period include the Mukyala Lift Irrigation Scheme, which was altered to YSR Vedadri Lift Irrigation Scheme, and the Veligallu Reservoir, now known as the YSR Veligallu Balancing Reservoir. Additionally, several other reservoirs and irrigation projects, such as the Sarvaraya Sagar Reservoir and the Nellore Barrage, were renamed after prominent leaders from the YSRCP and the Reddy community, including the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, father of the current Chief Minister.

The political controversy surrounding these name changes reached a tipping point when the newly formed TDP-led alliance government, following its victory in the 2024 general elections, issued a Government Order (G.O.) in August 2024, reversing the previous renaming decisions. The G.O. mandated that all YSRCP-era nomenclatures be dropped, with the projects returning to their original names. This change was later formalized in the state gazette, signaling a decisive political statement from the TDP government.

The YSRCP’s decision to rename a significant number of projects, particularly those linked to irrigation and infrastructure, has been a subject of intense debate. Critics argue that the move was less about administrative reforms and more about cementing political legacy. By renaming vital infrastructure after figures within the YSRCP and the Reddy community, the party sought to solidify its influence, creating a strong association between its governance and the projects in question.

TDP leaders have not held back in criticizing these actions, pointing to the audacity of the YSRCP in seemingly appropriating credit for works that were not initiated by their government. The TDP cadre’s reaction has been swift, with many labeling the renaming strategy as an attempt to rewrite history for political gain. With the reversal of these renaming efforts by the TDP government, the controversy surrounding the issue appears far from resolved, continuing to fuel political discourse in the state.

This incident highlights the ongoing power struggle between Andhra Pradesh’s political giants and serves as a reminder of how infrastructure projects can become a battleground for political symbolism.
