After nearly a three-year hiatus from South cinema, Pooja Hegde made a bold move by returning in a de-glam role in the Tamil film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj and starring Suriya. The actress had pinned high hopes on this project, hoping it would reignite her career. Unfortunately, Retro has delivered more of a career “retrospection” than a revival.
Pooja’s last major hit was Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo back in 2020. Since then, her films—Most Eligible Bachelor, Radhe Shyam, and Acharya—failed to impress at the box office. Following these setbacks, she shifted her focus from Telugu to Tamil and Hindi industries, appearing in Beast, Cirkus, and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan—all of which also underperformed.
This year, she hoped Retro would mark a fresh turning point, especially with its non-glamorous, performance-driven role. However, the film opened to a disappointing response. Critics and audiences alike found the execution lacking, with the narrative failing to connect within the first few minutes. Despite Suriya’s strong presence, even his performance couldn’t lift the film, and Pooja’s role failed to leave an impact.
Currently, Pooja is working on several upcoming projects, including a special role in Rajinikanth’s Coolie, Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan, Kanchana 4 alongside Raghava Lawrence, and a Hindi film Hai Jawani To Ishq Hona Hai.
Whether these films will give her the comeback she seeks remains to be seen. For now, it’s clear that Pooja Hegde is at a crucial juncture, where the right choices could either make or break her place in the industry.
