MBA student Pranay Loya’s recent LinkedIn post has struck a chord with international students, as he detailed the cultural adjustments he faced upon moving from India to the United States. Loya noted that in India, daily life is supported by family, neighbors, and household help, while in the U.S., individuals must handle everything independently—from cooking to cleaning to managing expenses.
His first wake-up call came at the airport, when he discovered that using a luggage trolley cost $8. This theme continued as he navigated higher service costs, mandatory tipping, and the U.S. job market—where students must actively network and pursue opportunities rather than waiting for campus recruiters.
“These shocks are exactly why I came—to grow, to unlearn and relearn,” Loya wrote, adding that while India provides comfort and support, the U.S. rewards effort and self-reliance.
