Presidents Day 2026: What’s Open and Closed on Feb 16

The United States will observe Presidents Day 2026 on Monday, February 16, continuing the long-standing tradition of honoring the nation’s presidential legacy. The holiday is always marked on the third Monday of February, regardless of the calendar year.

Originally established to commemorate George Washington’s birthday, Presidents Day has gradually evolved into a symbolic tribute to multiple U.S. presidents. Although its official federal name remains Washington’s Birthday, it is widely recognized by Americans as a day celebrating presidential leadership as a whole.

The modern observance date was set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Law, which shifted several national holidays to Mondays to create long weekends and bring consistency to the federal calendar.

As a federally recognized holiday, Presidents Day significantly affects government operations and public services. Federal offices and agencies will remain closed, along with postal services and mail delivery. Banks and financial institutions will not operate, and the U.S. stock market will also be closed for the day. Many public school districts are expected to suspend classes as well.

At the same time, most retail stores, shopping centers, grocery outlets, and convenience stores will continue to operate as usual. Restaurants and cafés generally remain open, while private-sector workplaces may follow their own holiday policies. Despite closures in several sectors, Presidents Day is especially known for major retail sales, with businesses offering attractive discounts and promotions across the country.
