OpenAI appears poised to unveil GPT-5, the much-anticipated successor to its GPT-4 model, with mounting evidence suggesting an official announcement via livestream today, Thursday, August 7, at 10:30 PM IST (10:00 AM PT). A teaser titled “LIVE5TREAM”, featuring a stylized “5”, has sparked widespread speculation across the AI community.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently alluded to the company’s roadmap, hinting at “something big-but-small” earlier this week—referring to the release of open-source models gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b—followed by a “big upgrade” expected later in the week. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s Head of Applied Research, Boris Power, added fuel to the speculation by expressing excitement about the public reception of GPT-5.

Third-party platforms such as Flowith have already integrated GPT-5 into their model selectors, further indicating an imminent release. Though OpenAI has not officially confirmed details, expectations are high for a major leap in capabilities.

GPT-5 is expected to offer significant enhancements in reasoning, memory, and task execution, potentially combining the precision of the o-series models (o3, o4) with the broad adaptability of the GPT-series. This could allow the system to better balance speed, cost-efficiency, and response depth depending on user needs—reducing the reliance on manual model selection.

Improved tool awareness, advanced multi-step reasoning, and more robust multimodal capabilities are also anticipated. A stronger memory system may enable GPT-5 to retain context across sessions, fostering more consistent and personalized interactions.

According to leaked access tiers, free-tier users may receive unlimited access to a standard version, while ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers could benefit from enhanced features, including integrations with tools such as Voice, Canvas, Search, and Deep Research.

However, OpenAI has sought to moderate expectations. Altman clarified that while GPT-5 represents a major step forward, it remains experimental and has not yet reached the company’s “IMO gold level” benchmark—reserved for a future, more advanced iteration.

With rising competition from Anthropic, Google, and Meta, GPT-5’s release is expected to further redefine the generative AI landscape.
