Pushpa 2’s OTT Run: A Surprising Dip After Theatrical Domination

Share

The first installment of Pushpa became nothing short of a cultural phenomenon upon its OTT release on Amazon Prime Video. The film didn’t just dominate viewership numbers — it sparked a wave of fanfare across social media platforms, with cricketers, film stars, and influencers mimicking Allu Arjun’s iconic mannerisms. Its reach on OTT was unprecedented, setting a new benchmark for post-theatrical success.

Naturally, expectations for Pushpa 2’s digital debut were sky-high, especially given the film’s record-shattering ₹1800 crore+ gross at the global box office. However, its recent premiere on Netflix tells a different story.

Despite its status as one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema history, Pushpa 2 has not made the kind of splash on OTT that many anticipated. Surprisingly, the film did not top the list of Netflix’s best-performing titles of 2025, leaving many industry observers puzzled.

One plausible reason could be the high theatrical footfall — a vast majority of the core audience might have already experienced the film in cinemas, diminishing the urgency or novelty factor for a rewatch on OTT. Still, considering the brand legacy of Pushpa and the massive anticipation for its sequel, the relatively muted OTT reception feels unexpected.

While the theatrical run of Pushpa 2 remains historic, its digital journey so far hasn’t matched the same level of impact — a rare contrast in today’s cinema-OTT ecosystem.
