For months, anticipation has been building around the much-talked-about multistarrer featuring two of India’s biggest icons — Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. The idea of bringing these legends together on screen has created a nationwide buzz. While both stars have confirmed the project separately, the one lingering mystery remains — who is directing it?
Early reports suggested that Lokesh Kanagaraj would helm the film. Having collaborated with Kamal Haasan on Vikram and Rajinikanth on Coolie, Lokesh seemed like the perfect choice. However, recent sources reveal that the filmmaker opted out after being unconvinced by the script, choosing instead to focus on Kaithi 2, the sequel to his breakout hit Kaithi (2019), which continues his cinematic universe.
The ambitious film is being jointly produced by RKFI and Red Giant Movies. The production houses have reportedly approached several young directors capable of handling the magnitude of a Rajini–Kamal project. Names like Petta director Karthik Subbaraj and Love Today filmmaker Pradeep Ranganathan have been considered.
Now, the latest industry speculation points to Nelson Dilipkumar, who previously directed Jailer and is currently working on Jailer 2. While there’s no official confirmation yet, Nelson’s proven rapport with Rajinikanth and his trademark dark-comedy style make him a strong contender to lead the historic collaboration.
As of now, Rajinikanth continues filming Jailer 2, and Kamal Haasan awaits the release of Indian 3, directed by Shankar. Fans are eagerly waiting for the moment when this monumental pairing officially takes shape — and to see who will be the creative force uniting two of Indian cinema’s greatest legends.
