Megastar Rajinikanth, the legendary Thalaiva of Indian cinema, once came close to proposing to the late actress Sridevi—but fate had other plans.
During the early days of their careers, Rajinikanth and Sridevi shared a magnetic on-screen chemistry across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films. Few knew, however, that behind the scenes, Rajinikanth had developed deep feelings for his co-star and intended to ask for her hand in marriage.
According to filmmaker K. Balachander, Rajinikanth attended a housewarming party hosted by Sridevi, determined to express his love. But just as he arrived, a sudden power outage plunged the house into darkness. Interpreting the blackout as a bad omen, Rajinikanth quietly turned back, never revealing his feelings to Sridevi.
Though the moment passed, their professional relationship endured. The duo went on to deliver memorable performances in classics like Moondru Mudichu, Johnny, Bhagwaan Dada, and Chaalbaaz.
Today, Rajinikanth gears up for his next big-screen outing, Coolie, set for a box office clash with War 2 on August 14, 2025. Sridevi, who passed away in 2018, remains immortalized through her legacy, with her final lead role in MOM (2017) and a cameo in Zero (2018).
