Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan: A Mixed Bag of Reviews

Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest film, Vettaiyan, directed by T.J. Gnanavel, hit theaters worldwide on October 10, 2024. This action-packed drama, also released in Telugu, has garnered mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

One interesting tidbit that has emerged is that actor Nani was initially offered the role of the corporate villain, a part that eventually went to Rana Daggubati. However, due to limited screen time and lack of character depth, Nani declined the offer. This decision has been vindicated by critics, who have noted that the character’s role in the film was indeed minimal.

Fans on social media have expressed varying opinions about Nani’s choice. While some have praised him for avoiding a potentially insignificant role, others have initially criticized him for turning down a big project like Vettaiyan. However, with the realization of the underwritten supporting characters in comparison to Rajinikanth’s lead, many fans now acknowledge that Nani made a wise decision.

In Vettaiyan, Rajinikanth plays SP Athiyan, a fearless IPS officer stationed in Kanniyakumari. Known for his encounters with criminals, he is nicknamed “Vettaiyan,” meaning “The Hunter.” The film also features Manju Warrier as Saranya, a school teacher who stands up for her students’ rights, and Amitabh Bachchan as Justice Sathyadev, a Supreme Court judge fighting for human rights. The movie explores the conflict between different perspectives on law enforcement and justice.

Produced by Lyca Productions, Vettaiyan boasts a star-studded cast, including Fahadh Faasil and Dushara Vijayan, and features music by Anirudh Ravichander. While the film has received mixed reviews, Rajinikanth’s powerful performance and the film’s exploration of important social issues have garnered praise from many.
