The much-awaited Bollywood epic Ramayana has officially begun shooting, setting off a wave of excitement among fans as behind-the-scenes images continue to leak online. Adding to the buzz, Rakul Preet Singh has officially signed on to portray Surpanakha, the sister of Ravana — a character pivotal to the unfolding of the Ramayana saga.
According to reports, the makers initially approached Priyanka Chopra for the role, but due to her packed international commitments, she couldn’t accommodate the project. This opened the door for Rakul, who, sources say, fit the part perfectly, bringing fresh energy and intensity to the iconic character.
The film’s official announcement was made last November, accompanied by a poster that revealed the project will be a two-part saga. Ramayan Part 1 is slated for release on Diwali 2026, while Ramayan Part 2 will hit theatres on Diwali 2027. Helmed by Nitish Tiwari, the film features a star-studded cast: Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravi Dubey as Laxman, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, and Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari.
While Priyanka Chopra is not part of Ramayana, she is set to make a grand comeback to Indian cinema in SS Rajamouli’s next directorial venture, where she will share screen space with Mahesh Babu.
