A few months ago, actress Ranya Rao was embroiled in a gold smuggling case in Karnataka and taken into custody for investigation. The latest reports reveal that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has now imposed a hefty fine of Rs 102 crore on her.
The DRI also penalized hotelier Tarun Kondaraju with Rs 63 crore and jewellers Sahil Sakaria Jain and Bharat Kumar Jain with Rs 56 crore each. Officials reportedly met the accused at Bengaluru Central Jail and served them with a 250-page notice accompanied by a 2,500-page annexure. “It was a herculean task to prepare a detailed notice with all supporting documents. In total, we served 11,000 pages to the accused,” sources close to DRI said.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Ranya Rao was caught with 14.8 kg of gold on March 3 at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, upon her arrival from Dubai. Following the incident, she was sentenced to one year of imprisonment under the stringent Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA).
