Once upon a time, item songs in films were dominated by a set of professional dancers who were specifically hired for such performances. Directors preferred these specialists, and their screen presence often turned item numbers into chartbusters. However, trends have changed significantly over the years. Today, actresses who play lead heroines are also doubling up as item girls in the same film, earning separate remuneration for special songs in addition to their acting fees.
Not just within their own films, many leading actresses are also readily accepting item song offers in other star-driven projects. Interestingly, the remuneration for an item number often surpasses what they earn for a full-fledged acting role. Actresses like Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal, Tamannaah, Pooja Hegde, and Sreeleela have already embraced this trend. The same pattern has recently become visible in Bollywood as well.
In this context, National Crush Rashmika Mandanna made heads turn by impressing audiences both as an actress and an item performer. After her Bollywood debut Goodbye, she further grabbed attention with her special song appearance in the recently released Thama. Her energetic performance and screen appeal brought her even closer to young audiences, making her a hot favorite among filmmakers.
Naturally, directors and producers began celebrating the arrival of a new reliable item girl, confident that Rashmika could be convinced to perform special songs whenever she was signed as a heroine. However, Rashmika surprised the industry by laying down a firm condition. She reportedly stated that she would perform item songs only for films directed by two specific directors. While she chose not to reveal their names for now, she mentioned that she would disclose them herself at the right time.
This revelation made it clear that Rashmika intends to be highly selective about item numbers. While this decision disappointed many filmmakers, especially in Tollywood, it also highlighted her clear career boundaries. Several Telugu directors had been keen on experimenting with her image and capitalizing on her pan-India popularity. Given that Rashmika is both a strong performer and a skilled dancer, many filmmakers were also eager to cast her in female-centric films.
However, with her newly revealed conditions, some may now reconsider their plans. At present, Rashmika is juggling multiple projects across industries. In Telugu, she is working on the woman-oriented film Mysaa and has also been signed as the female lead in Vijay Deverakonda’s 14th film. In Bollywood, she continues to stay busy with projects like Cocktail 2.
