Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, fondly known as NTR, remains an iconic figure in Indian cinema and politics. Even 30 years after his passing, he continues to be revered as a household name among Telugu-speaking communities worldwide.
Born on 28th May 1923 in Nimmakuru (then part of Madras Presidency, now Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh), NTR completed his graduation and briefly worked as a sub-registrar. Following his passion, he left his government job at 24 to pursue acting, debuting in 1949 with the film Mana Desam. This bold decision paved the way for a legendary cinematic journey.
Over decades, NTR became one of India’s most beloved actors, renowned for his commanding screen presence, versatile performances, and unmatched dialogue delivery. His filmography spans family dramas, romantic classics, mythological epics, and fantasy adventures. Some of his most celebrated films include Mayabazar, Gundamma Katha, Adavi Ramudu, Daana Veera Soora Karna, Lava Kusa, Sri Krishnarjuna Yudham, and Brahmarshi Vishwamitra.
His contribution to cinema earned him numerous accolades, including Padma Shri, National Awards, Nandi Awards, Rashtrapati Awards, and an honorary doctorate from Andhra University.
NTR’s influence extended beyond cinema. In 1982, he founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), marking a historic entry into politics. Just nine months later, he became Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh with a sweeping mandate. His administration introduced pioneering welfare initiatives: subsidized rice at Rs 2 per kg, reservation for backward classes in local elections, a liquor ban, women’s land ownership through house site pattas, and special courts for crimes against women.
Serving four terms as Chief Minister, NTR combined charisma, vision, and public service, leaving an enduring legacy. He briefly returned to films during the twilight of his career before passing away from a heart attack on 18th January 1996. Today, his principles continue to guide the TDP under the leadership of his son-in-law, Chandrababu Naidu.
