Renuka Chowdhury Slams BJP for Neglecting Telugu States’ Promises

Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury, a fierce critic from Telangana, launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led NDA government, accusing them of neglecting the southern states, particularly the Telugu states. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, she highlighted the government’s indifference towards Kerala’s devastating losses during the Wayanad landslide and floods, questioning whether the lack of BJP presence in the south was the reason behind this discrimination.

Renuka Chowdhury didn’t hold back as she reminded the Centre of the unfulfilled promises made to the Telugu states in 2014, ahead of their bifurcation. She pointed out that the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act passed by both houses of Parliament had left Khammam and other regions in the Telugu states betrayed. Even after a decade, promises such as the establishment of a Steel Plant, Tribal University, Central Horticultural University, and national status for key projects like the Palamuru Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project remain unmet.

Chowdhury also criticized the Andhra Pradesh government for supporting the BJP, calling it a convenient alliance that she felt should be overlooked for the greater good of the state. She stressed the unkept assurances, including the proposed NTPC power units at Ramagundam, and lambasted the Centre for its failure to deliver on decisions made by Parliament.

Questioning the Centre’s accountability, she made it clear that the Telugu states were not begging for favours but asserting their rightful claims. Chowdhury further called out the BJP government for only returning a paltry 0.4 paise for every rupee Telangana contributes through taxes, despite the state contributing nearly 4.5% of India’s GDP. With strong words, she ridiculed the BJP’s slogan of “Hamara Prayaas aur Aapka Vikas,” highlighting the stark contrast between the Centre’s promises and the realities faced by the southern states.
