Following the lukewarm reception of Kanguva, Tamil superstar Suriya’s new release Retro has struggled to gain traction in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Trade insiders report that the film managed just over ₹1 crore net on its opening day—well below the expected figures for a star of Suriya’s calibre.
Local distributors attribute Retro’s slow start to stiff competition from Nani’s latest hit, which monopolized prime screens on May 1 and drew audiences away. In Retro, Suriya portrays a former gangster attempting to leave violence behind after falling for Pooja Hegde’s character. Despite their on-screen rapport, critics have panned the film’s narrative as predictable, with the central romance failing to inject the emotional heft needed to elevate the story.
With production and distribution costs factored in, Retro needs approximately ₹9 crore in the Telugu markets to break even. The subdued opening places immense pressure on the film to deliver a substantial weekend uptick. “Unless collections surge sharply over the next two days, recovering costs will be an uphill battle—especially given the premium ticket rates,” warns one distributor.
Concerns are mounting over Suriya’s recent project choices. After consecutive underperformers, industry observers suggest the actor exercise greater selectivity in scripts if he hopes to reclaim his box-office dominance.
