Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has strongly criticized the Centre for what he described as discrimination against the state in the Padma award announcements. He pointed out that while only two people from Telangana were honored with Padma awards, five individuals from neighboring Andhra Pradesh were selected for the prestigious recognition.
The Telangana government had recommended notable figures such as folk singer Gaddar for Padma Vibhushan, educationist Chukka Ramaiah, poet Andesri for Padma Bhushan, and poet-singer Goreti Venkanna, and poet-historian Jayadheer Tirumala Rao for Padma Shri. However, none of these recommendations were considered.
Instead, Padma awards were conferred to Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in the field of medicine for Padma Vibhushan, and Manda Krishna Madiga in the field of public affairs for Padma Shri.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh saw selections like actor-MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna for Padma Bhushan, K.L. Krishna, and Vadiraj Raghavendracharya Panchamukhi for their contributions to literature and education, and Madugula Naga Phani Sarma and Miriyala Appa Rao (posthumously) for their contributions to art, all receiving Padma Shri.
Revanth Reddy has expressed his intention to write to the Centre to officially lodge his dissatisfaction with the selection process, highlighting the glaring disparity in the number of awards received by the two states, with only two individuals from Telangana chosen out of the 139 recipients.
