Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV), known for his unfiltered opinions and staunch atheism, has offered a rare and emotional review of the upcoming mythological epic Kannappa. In a personal WhatsApp message shared with actor Manchu Vishnu, RGV revealed that despite his long-standing aversion to religious themes, he was profoundly moved by Vishnu’s portrayal of Thinnadu in the film.
RGV candidly admitted that he typically avoids devotional films, having seen the original Kannappa during his college days only for its lead pair and music, not for its spiritual narrative. However, Vishnu’s performance in the new version, he said, transcended mere acting. According to RGV, Vishnu did not just play the role—he embodied it, likening his portrayal to that of a “high priest” exuding emotional strength and divine intensity.
Highlighting a particularly powerful moment, RGV praised the climax scene in which Thinnadu offers his eyes to stop the bleeding of the Shiva lingam. “Even as an atheist,” he wrote, “I was moved to the core.” He described Vishnu’s face during that scene as “a canvas of anguish painted with reverence,” calling it a “masterclass in emotional depth.”
Perhaps most striking was RGV’s closing remark: while most audiences may flock to the theatres for Prabhas’s presence in the film, he would go solely to witness Manchu Vishnu’s performance.
In response to this heartfelt message, a visibly emotional Vishnu replied that RGV’s words brought him to tears and gave him strength during one of the most challenging times in his life. The exchange between the maverick director and the dedicated actor has since resonated deeply within the film fraternity, underscoring the transformative power of performance—regardless of personal beliefs.
