Always in news for being one of the very few Indian states with a surplus budget, Telangana seems to have found itself in a helpless position where it can’t pay just about Rs. 200 crores to clear the dues to nearly 170 private hospitals in the state.

Over the last five and a half months, the state’s health department got stuck into a huge financial crisis., which led to the Telangana Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes’ Association (THANA) threatening the government that they will stall the Arogyasri scheme in nearly 170 hospitals across the state.

The THANA’s protest will affect millions of poor beneficiaries belonging to the 80% of the BPL. THANA sent a notice to the officials at the Aarogyasri Health Care Trust (AHCT) and are awaiting the government’s response.

There are 105 private empanelled Aarogyasri hospitals in Hyderabad and Rangareddy, 26 in Warangal, 17 in Karimnagar, 9 in Khammam, 8 in Nizamabad, 5 in Mahbubnagar and 4 in Medak. Since June 2, 2014, the KCR government carried out Arogyasri medical benefits to 2,81,548 poor patients which are worth Rs 774 crore.
