Despite a ban on the Cock fights in Andhra Pradesh, the punters raked in Rs 100 crore at day one of the three day Sankranthi festival.

The cockfights, which were recently banned by the High Court have again started in costal districts on the occasion of Sankranthi. Though the cops kept an eye on them, the organizers and the politicians allowed the cock fights at their respective areas in a large scale.

It is reported that around Rs 500 crore is the total turnover of the fights for this sankranti. Even though few organizers were arrested, the politicians continued encouraging the practice and the gambling and even set up tents across the village.

“Police know about the venues of cock fights. They simply warn the organizers and do not conduct raids as local politicians are involved. The police carry out raids at isolated places for records sake,” claimed a punter in Polavaram village of East Godavari district. “We are keeping a strict vigil, but the involvement of politicians has minimised our role,” admitted a senior police officer in the city.

The punters can bet any amount starting from Rs 100 to Rs 10 lakh and if they win, they would receive the money on the spot.

The fight begins in the morning and usually ends in the evening but for some the fight continued till after the sunset. According to the locals, the attendance to the fight was not high due to Bogi, but suspect that the number would increase after Sankranthi. Higher attendance equals more money!!
