Washington, May 2 (IANS) — Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State and acting National Security Advisor, emphasized that while the US remains committed to addressing the Ukraine conflict, there are growing global challenges that demand attention.
In an interview with Fox News, Rubio stated, “We’re not giving up on Ukraine, but there comes a point when the US President, Donald Trump, must decide how much time to dedicate to it, especially with other pressing issues at hand.” He noted that while the war in Ukraine remains significant, he believes challenges related to China and Iran’s nuclear ambitions are more crucial in the long term.
Rubio also acknowledged the narrow gap between Moscow and Kyiv, stating that while the positions are closer, substantial breakthroughs are still needed for peace. He suggested that President Trump may soon need to reassess the level of US involvement in the Ukraine crisis.
Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Rubio discussed the importance of strengthening conditions for peace talks on Ukraine. The conversation, following a discussion between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff on April 25, focused on building prerequisites for a sustainable peace.
Lavrov and Rubio agreed on the need for more robust steps towards peace, with both parties continuing productive discussions on key political issues. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that President Putin is open to negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions. Additionally, Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov described the April 25 conversation between Putin and Witkoff as “constructive and useful.”
