President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the proposed ‘Gold Card’ will provide a pathway to citizenship for those who purchase it, with an estimated price of $5 million. He indicated that the card could be available for sale within two weeks.
The ‘Gold Card’ aims to facilitate American companies in recruiting top talent from leading universities worldwide, particularly in India, China, and Japan. Additionally, it would allow wealthy foreigners to immigrate to the U.S., with the expectation that some may invest in businesses that generate jobs.
“It’s essentially an upgraded Green Card that also leads to citizenship,” Trump stated at the first meeting of his cabinet. “We’re calling it the Gold Card, and I believe it will be highly valued. I expect it to be very successful, and we’re looking forward to launching it in about two weeks.”
The existing Green Card already provides permanent residency and a pathway to citizenship. Additionally, the U.S. has the EB-5 visa program, which grants Green Cards to foreign investors for a minimum investment of around $1 million. However, the Trump administration has criticized its effectiveness.
Trump highlighted that companies frequently seek to hire top students from prestigious institutions but face hurdles due to visa uncertainties. “I get calls from companies wanting to hire the number one student at a school,” he explained.
He further emphasized that many graduates from elite institutions, such as Harvard, Yale, and the Wharton School of Finance, secure job offers but often lose opportunities due to visa restrictions. “Companies can now simply purchase a Gold Card, using it as a recruitment tool,” he added. “We’re preparing to launch sales within the next two weeks.”
Trump also suggested that the ‘Gold Card’ could serve as a revenue source to help reduce national debt.
