Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy appears to have realised the political damage caused by the controversial Rushikonda Palace constructed in Visakhapatnam. The project has attracted intense criticism over alleged misuse of power and large-scale wastage of public funds, significantly denting his public image.
In what is being seen as an attempt at damage control, Jagan recently claimed before the media that the palace was built at a cost of just ₹240 crore. He even went on to say that the facility is grand enough to host dignitaries like Prime Minister Narendra Modi or even the Russian President. However, this claim has immediately come under scrutiny.
According to a newspaper report published by a reputed media house, the actual expenditure incurred by the Jagan government on the Rushikonda Palace was around ₹453 crore—nearly double the amount he mentioned. The report further states that existing Haritha Resorts, which were generating an annual revenue of approximately ₹7 crore, were demolished to make way for the palace. In total, around 20 acres of land were cleared, with the palace itself spanning about 9 acres.
The report also alleges that funds were diverted from the horticulture and tourism departments to finance the construction. With official records and expenditure details reportedly available on paper, Jagan’s revised claim about the project cost has failed to convince critics.
Reacting to the issue, a senior TDP leader remarked that instead of changing figures and making questionable statements in public, Jagan should acknowledge the extent of the damage caused and offer an apology. The controversy surrounding the Rushikonda Palace continues to fuel political debate, with opposition parties citing it as a prime example of alleged abuse of power and misuse of public money.
