The latest example drawing attention is Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s pairing with Rashmika Mandanna in Sikander, which features a staggering 31-year age difference between the two. The announcement has sparked criticism across social platforms, but some within the industry have stepped up in defense of the practice.
Actress Ameesha Patel, who recently starred alongside Sunny Deol in the blockbuster Gadar 2, addressed the age-gap controversy by sharing her own experience. “I have also worked with heroes much older than me. Sunny Deol and I had a 20-year age difference, yet our chemistry was widely appreciated. If audiences connect with the characters, age should not be a barrier,” she said. Ameesha also emphasized that the success of such films shows that content, not age, is what resonates with viewers.
Salman Khan himself responded to the buzz during the Sikander trailer launch with his signature wit. “Why do you have a problem when neither the heroine nor her father has one? If Rashmika gets married and has a child, she will become a big star. We’ll act again, and I’ll take her permission as a mother,” he quipped, effectively shutting down the criticism.
Despite recurring debates around older male leads being paired with much younger actresses, the trend seems far from over. As long as audiences accept these on-screen pairings and the films succeed at the box office, it appears stardom and star power will continue to outweigh age compatibility in casting decisions.
