The pressure on children from schools and colleges in the name of academics is a growing concern. Despite government warnings to shift the focus from mere rankings and grades, the issue persists. Parents, too, are often cited as contributing to this pressure. While the authorities have issued several guidelines and suggestions, implementation remains limited.
Recently, actress Samantha Akkineni spoke out on this issue, emphasizing that grades and marks alone are not enough — teaching children human values is equally important. She stressed that education should encompass both academics and moral development, ensuring children learn life skills alongside traditional subjects. Samantha also highlighted the importance of maintaining health, advising students not to neglect it even amidst their busy schedules.
Reflecting on her own school days, she said she did not face such pressures but benefited immensely from lessons in friendship, compassion, empathy, and respect for others. These values helped her navigate life successfully and build resilience to face any challenges. Samantha suggested that schools should incorporate curricula that combine academics with life skills and values, enabling children to grow into well-rounded individuals.
Samantha also pointed out a concerning rise in student suicides in India in 2023, with Maharashtra recording the highest cases. Known for her active involvement in social causes, she runs charities and initiatives that support orphanages and promote children’s education.
Currently, Samantha is not actively working in films but is engaged in Bollywood web series projects, with updates on new movie ventures expected soon. Through her social work and public statements, Samantha continues to emphasize the importance of a balanced approach to education, wellbeing, and personal growth for students.
