Actress Sanam Shetty took to her official X account on February 18, 2025, to express her strong disapproval of the recently released teaser for the film Bad Girl. She voiced concerns over the way the film portrays freedom of choice and gender equality, particularly in the context of minors.
Shetty wrote, “#BADGIRL Teaser is NOT a BOLD Example.. It’s a #BAD Example! The concepts of #FreedomOfChoice and #GenderEquality are being wrongly depicted, especially when it involves minors. Legally, ethically, and even medically, this sends a dangerous message to impressionable adolescents. It’s deeply disappointing to see so-called responsible filmmakers funding and supporting such content. Do you agree with me?”
Speaking to reporters, the actress elaborated on her stance, emphasizing that true equality is about fair opportunities, not reckless behavior. “Equality doesn’t mean smoking, consuming drugs, or engaging in multiple relationships. It means having access to the same opportunities. But is there true equality in our industry? No. Are male and female actors paid the same? No. Are they treated the same way? No. From personal experience, I can say that when women expect acting opportunities, they often face inappropriate propositions instead. This is where we need to fight for equality. But if a film promotes the idea that schoolgirls should indulge in smoking, drinking, and reckless relationships, what kind of message does that send?”
Her remarks have ignited a wider discussion about feminism, equality, and the portrayal of women in the Tamil film industry. While some support her views, others argue that cinema is a medium of creative expression that reflects different aspects of society. The debate continues, raising important questions about responsibility in filmmaking.
