Supreme Court of India passed a sensational judgment today. SC passes the judgment on giving voting eligibility to the non-resident Indians. The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central government to implement e-voting facilities for Non-Resident Indians (NRI) within eight weeks.
The apex court passed the order in response to a plea filed by Pravasi Bharat chairman Nagender Chindam seeking voting rights for the NRIs.The SC trailed the petition put forward by NRIs and ordered EC to do the needful. This has been a long standing petition with NRIs.
Henceforth the NRIs will vote through the e-voting facility. Earlier, in 2010, NRIs were granted voting rights provided they were physically present in their respective constituencies during polls.
In the new process NRIs will be sent ballot papers electronically and they will have to return it to poll authorities physically. This would be helpful for 11 million NRIs globally .From now they will participate in elections without having to travel to India for the purpose.
