Seattle Move Debate: ₹1 Crore Indian Couple Weighs US Offer

A recent Reddit post has ignited debate after a 35-year-old Indian professional shared his dilemma about relocating to Seattle, USA, despite already enjoying a combined household income of over ₹1 crore per year in India.

The user explained that he earns around ₹60 lakh annually (including stock benefits), while his wife, 34, makes ₹40 lakh. The couple has cleared all major loans except for an ₹18 lakh property loan for his parents. Now, his company has offered him a transfer to Seattle on an L1 visa, with compensation of $190,000 in 2025 and $210,000 in 2026. While the offer appears financially attractive, the responses on Reddit revealed divided opinions.

Some users emphasized long-term opportunities rather than immediate earnings. One commenter noted: “After taxes, health insurance, and 401k, you’ll take home around $155k. That’s comfortable but not as lavish as a ₹1 crore lifestyle in India. However, if you want a green card, L1A is your best bet. In 4-5 years, your kids could become US citizens. Flexibility matters more than just money.”

Others were skeptical, arguing that the move may not be worth it. “$155k in Seattle is like earning ₹20–25 lakh in India. You’re already making ₹1 crore here. Don’t throw that away. The US isn’t what it used to be. If your wife wants a change, just take a holiday,” one blunt reply said.

Meanwhile, some pointed to lifestyle and cultural advantages. A Redditor who lived in Seattle for seven years highlighted perks such as no state income tax, lower effective taxes, abundant outdoor opportunities, and exposure to global work culture. “Opportunities like this don’t come often. You can always come back to India, but leaving is harder. Your wife could even start a business on an EAD. I loved my time there and recommend it for the experience,” they wrote.

Not all feedback was positive, though. Several warned about immigration hurdles, dependence on the employer under an L1 visa, and green card delays. “Don’t do it. The immigration climate is harsh. Your wife may face work restrictions, and with only one income, your lifestyle will take a hit,” another user cautioned.

The discussion reflects a common dilemma faced by many mid-career Indian professionals: whether to prioritize financial stability and comfort at home, or take a leap for international exposure, potential green card benefits, and the life experience of working abroad.
