Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, reports suggest that PS Vinod will be the cinematographer for SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s much-anticipated big-budget venture, tentatively titled SSMB29. This news caught many fans by surprise, as most expected Rajamouli to reunite with his long-time collaborator K.K. Senthil Kumar, who was behind the lens for blockbusters like Magadheera, Eega, the Baahubali series, and RRR.
Addressing the speculation, Senthil Kumar recently clarified the situation during a promotional interview for his upcoming film Junior, in conversation with Manatelugu.com. He responded to the buzz surrounding his absence from the Rajamouli-Mahesh Babu project, dismissing some of the rumors doing the rounds.
There was talk that Senthil Kumar’s aspiration to become a director was the reason he wasn’t onboard for SSMB29, but he clarified that this wasn’t the case. “I’ve always had the desire to direct, but that’s not the reason I’m not working on Rajamouli’s next,” he explained. “Rajamouli wanted to collaborate with a different cinematographer this time, and this isn’t the first instance — it happened before with Maryada Ramanna as well. Taking breaks between collaborations can be refreshing.”
When asked if he felt possessive about his long-standing creative partnership with Rajamouli, Senthil Kumar smiled and said, “Definitely not. If I get possessive, I’m the only one who suffers. They informed me about the decision early on during the pre-production phase.”
On his directorial ambitions, Senthil Kumar confirmed that he has been contemplating the move for a while. “Direction requires bringing many creative elements together, and if everything aligns, I’ll certainly pursue it,” he shared. Interestingly, he also mentioned that when he eventually directs, he might hire another cinematographer, acknowledging that handling both responsibilities might dilute the output.
