Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google and one of the most influential figures in Silicon Valley, has re-emerged as a central force in Alphabet’s artificial intelligence efforts. After stepping back from day-to-day operations in 2019, Brin is now spending nearly every day at the company’s headquarters, working closely with teams on Gemini—Google’s advanced generative AI assistant and a flagship initiative from its DeepMind division.
Speaking at the 2025 Google I/O developer conference alongside DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Brin emphasized the urgency of the moment for computer scientists worldwide. “Honestly, anybody who’s a computer scientist should not be retired right now,” Brin told journalist Alex Kantrowitz of Big Technology. He described the current AI landscape as a defining moment in the evolution of technology—surpassing even the early days of the internet in terms of potential impact and velocity.
Brin’s renewed involvement comes at a time of intense global competition to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI)—systems capable of human-level cognition and problem-solving. With OpenAI’s ChatGPT having catalyzed a new era of AI breakthroughs, tech giants are racing to lead the field. “We fully intend that Gemini will be the very first AGI,” Brin stated, signaling Google’s commitment to not only participate in, but define the future of AI.
While Brin remained active during his so-called retirement—investing in ventures such as airship startup LTA Research, advancing Parkinson’s disease research, and exploring real estate—he made it clear that the promise and responsibility of AI innovation have drawn him back to the core of technological development. “There’s just never been a greater, sort of, problem and opportunity — greater cusp of technology,” he said.
Brin’s return is not just symbolic; it marks a pivotal moment for Alphabet and the broader tech community as the race to build safe, capable AGI intensifies. His presence and vision are expected to galvanize efforts across the company and reinforce Google’s position at the forefront of the next technological revolution.
