Sharmila Slams YSRCP, Vows Congress Fight Over Polavaram

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee President YS Sharmila launched a scathing attack on the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), likening it to a minor stream destined to merge with the “oceanic” Congress party. Speaking at a public meeting in Tanuku on Friday evening, Sharmila reaffirmed her party’s commitment to the state’s development, particularly in resolving long-pending irrigation issues.

“The Congress is a vast ocean, and many small streams (pilla kaluva) will eventually flow into it. YSRCP is just one of them,” she said, suggesting that political consolidation under the Congress was inevitable.

A major portion of her speech focused on the Polavaram Project, which she described as the dream of her late father and former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. She blamed Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy for significantly delaying the project.

“They claimed they would complete Polavaram and provide water to the people, even made bold statements in the Assembly. But by altering contractors and opting for reverse tenders, they’ve delayed it by a decade,” she alleged.

Sharmila further criticized the YSRCP government for reportedly considering a reduction in the height of the Polavaram dam — a move she said defeats the purpose of the project and betrays the interests of Andhra Pradesh. She also held the TDP-JSP-BJP alliance accountable, questioning their silence on the issue.

“Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan say they are close to the Modi-led central government. Then why are they not speaking up for Andhra Pradesh? Why are they not opposing the proposed dam height reduction?” she asked.

Reiterating the Congress party’s stance, Sharmila assured that if any move is made to reduce the dam height, the party will launch strong protests and demand justice for the displaced families who are yet to be fully rehabilitated.

She also addressed concerns regarding the Banakacharla Project, stating that her stand is firmly rooted in the welfare of Andhra Pradesh.

“As the President of the AP Congress, my priority is the well-being of Andhra Pradesh. If the Banakacharla Project benefits Rayalaseema by improving water supply, we will support it. At the same time, our party also believes that Telangana should not be treated unfairly in the process,” she clarified.

YS Sharmila’s remarks mark a strong political positioning by the Congress in Andhra Pradesh ahead of critical decisions surrounding water infrastructure and inter-state cooperation.
