Sharmila’s TTD Temple Remarks Spark Controversy in Andhra Pradesh

The Tirumala temple, one of the most revered Hindu shrines, has once again found itself in the midst of political debate. Andhra Pradesh Congress president Sharmila recently made comments that drew widespread attention and sparked controversy.

The issue stems from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) announcement to construct 5,000 temples in Dalit colonies across Andhra Pradesh. These temples are being funded through the SRIVANI Trust, a scheme collecting voluntary donations from devotees, and do not involve the state government.

Despite this, Sharmila questioned the initiative, stating,

“Why spend so much money on temples? The chief minister must focus on building social infrastructure, laying roads, and providing other amenities instead.”

Her remarks, directed at the state government, were seen as misplaced, given that the temple project falls entirely under TTD’s jurisdiction. Reports indicate that her comments have caused unease within her own party, with senior Congress leaders reportedly advising her to avoid personal remarks on sensitive religious matters.

The incident highlights the delicate balance between religion and politics, and the sensitivity surrounding comments on revered institutions like the Tirumala temple.
