In a shocking and surprising event Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke has announced tomorrow’s World Cup final will be his last one-day international match. Clarke announced that he would retire from One Day Cricket at the conclusion of the 2015 Cricket World Cup final match.
The Australian skipper made the announcement today at a press conference. He told reporters that retiring from the 50-over game would potentially prolong his Test career.
“I think it’s the right time for me and the Australian cricket team. I’m hopeful it will prolong my Test career and that’s a priority for me’’said Clarke
Clarke will lead the Australian side against New Zealand in tomorrow’s World Cup final match. The New South Wales player did not consider Sunday’s match to be any more significant because of his decision.
Clarke played 244 ODIs, made 7907 runs at an average of 44.42 with 8 centuries and 57 half-centuries. He led his country in 73 matches, of which Australia won 49. After Australia’s loss to India in the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Cup, Ricky Ponting stepped down and endorsed Clarke to be the next captain of the Australian side.
