In the film industry, female actors often face harsh and unfair labels when their initial films do not perform well at the box office. One such tag is being called an “Iron Leg,” with the blame for a movie’s failure falling squarely on their shoulders—a label that male actors rarely have to endure. Shruti Haasan too faced this early in her career.
Despite consecutive setbacks with her first few films, Shruti never ran out of opportunities. Her turning point came with Gabbar Singh, a massive hit that completely changed how the audience and industry perceived her. From that moment on, there was no looking back.
In a recent interview, Shruti expressed her gratitude to Pawan Kalyan and director Harish Shankar for looking beyond her earlier failures and casting her in Gabbar Singh. That one decision, she said, turned her career around.
Shruti also clarified that she dislikes being called either “lucky” or “unlucky.” “I just want to be seen as an actress who enjoys her work,” she said, adding that she loves cinema deeply and remains thankful to the audience for supporting her journey. Talking about her film 3, which didn’t fare well at the box office, Shruti reflected that if it had released in today’s era of OTT platforms and pan-India cinema, it would have been a huge success—just like its song Kolaveri Di which became a nationwide sensation.
Currently, Shruti is part of Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film Coolie, where she plays a character named Preethi. She revealed that director Lokesh Kanagaraj narrated the story to her during the shoot of a music video and confirmed her role on the spot. In the film, she plays the daughter of veteran actor Sathyaraj, a role she describes as one of the most special in her career.
