As part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Smart Cities Mission, the Union Government on Thurday announced a list of 98 smart cities. Union Minister of Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu released the list of 98 cities, including 24 Capital cities of states (Jammu & Kashmir not included), 13 cities from Uttar Pradesh and 12 from Tamil Nadu. Dampening the hopes of people of both Telugu speaking states, only 3 smart cities have been picked from the successor state of Andhra Pradesh and 2 from Telangana. Other cities include 10 from Maharashtra, 7 from Madhya Pradesh and 3 from Bihar.
Announcing the list, Venkaiah Naidu stated that government’s prime motive is to “enhance” urban life. It may be recalled that PM Narendra Modi had launched criteria, guidelinnes for 100 smart cities to be developed on June 25. He had said that Smart Cities would be selected through City Challenge Competition. He said 13 crore population across 98 cities which is 35% of urban population will be covered under SmartCity Mission.
Except Jammu and Kashmir, all states have finalised the names of proposed Smart Cities through competition. Centre has allotted Rs 48,000 crore for development of 100 smart cities. Each smart city would get a Central assistance of Rs 100 crore per year for five years.
