Sonia turns attention on AP affairs

AICC President Sonia Gandhi, soon after returning from abroad after a medical check-up, has begun to focus her attention on the goings on in Andhra Pradesh where the ruling Congress party is caught in a political turbulence with a rejuvenated and determined Opposition pushing the Kiran Kumar Reddy government to the wall on various issues.

The uncertainty continuing over the Telangana issue, increase in power tariff,  besides acute power shortage, drinking water problem, shut down of industries due to prolonged power cuts etc have provided the Opposition parties with the much needed fodder to grind the government. Added to this internal squabbling in the Kiran Cabinet and the lack coordination between the government and the party organization has put the Congress party on the mat.

Even as the Chief Minister was trying to wriggle out of the tricky situation, like a bolt from the blue came the CBI including the name of Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy as an accused in yet another charge-sheet filed in connection with the illegal assets case of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. Already two other ministers — Mopidevi Venkataramana and Dharmana Prasada Rao — were  named in earlier charge-sheets as accused in the case. While  Mopidevi Venkatarama had to quit as minister and was arrested and now cooling his heels in the jail, Dharmana’sa resignation was not accepted by the state cabinet though the democles’ sword is still hanging on his head.

In all six ministers of the present Kiran Cabinet  who were also members in the late YSR ministry along with eight IAS officers were put in the dock with the Supreme Court issuing notices to them in the issuance of 26 controversial GOs which deemed to have helped Jagan to amass wealth. Thus with two ministers already facing charges in the CBI case, the latest one to be put in the dock is the Home Minister. This has put the Chief Minister in piquant situation.

Though some ministers in the Kiran Cabinet have suddenly began a vitriolic attack on late YSR and his family including Jagan, some senior party leaders disagreed with YSR bashing posture being adopted by ministers as this would not save the skin of the tainted ministers and also might boomerang on the party’s chances.. Even some ministers openly ridiculed such an attitude. Some senior Congress leaders like V. Hanumantha Rao  wanted that all the tainted ministers should be sacked forthwith by following the footsteps of Manmohan Singh who did not hesitate to sack tainted ministers like D. Raja.

Thus the political atmosphere is likely to get warmed up further in the coming days , especially after the meeting of the PCC President and Chief Minister with Rahul  Gandhi.
