A South Korean special counsel team announced Monday that it plans to indict former First Lady Kim Keon Hee this week on charges of corruption and bribery. The move comes as her court-approved detention period is set to expire on Sunday.
Kim, the jailed wife of ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol, was transported in a prison van to Special Counsel Min Joong-ki’s office for a fourth round of questioning, according to Yonhap News Agency. “She is mostly exercising her right to remain silent,” Assistant Special Counsel Park Sang-jin told reporters.
Investigators are examining allegations that Kim engaged in stock manipulation, meddled in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and 2024 general elections, and accepted luxury gifts from the Unification Church via shaman Jeon Seong-bae in exchange for business favors.
Jeon, who was arrested last week, is suspected of receiving a diamond necklace and Chanel handbags from the church and delivering them to Kim. Authorities allege these gifts were linked to requests for support in securing development projects in Cambodia, acquiring broadcaster YTN, and hosting a United Nations office in South Korea.
An official from the special counsel’s team stated that Kim’s indictment could come as early as Friday, depending on the investigation’s progress.
