SS Rajamouli is a name synonymous with cinematic excellence. With films like Magadheera, Eega, Baahubali franchise, and RRR, he has set unparalleled benchmarks in Indian filmmaking. His unique storytelling, grand vision, and technical brilliance continue to inspire countless filmmakers across the country.
Recently, acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap heaped praise on Rajamouli during a masterclass at Nagarjuna’s Annapurna School of Film and Media in Hyderabad. Kashyap, known for Gangs of Wasseypur and Black Friday, stated that many filmmakers have attempted to replicate Rajamouli’s style but failed to recreate the same magic. He emphasized that at least ten directors have tried to be the “next Rajamouli,” but none could match his vision.
Kashyap advised aspiring filmmakers to embrace originality instead of blindly imitating successful directors. He also pointed out that many directors tried to copy Prashanth Neel’s KGF but struggled to achieve the same success. He reminded students that the pan-India trend is not new, citing examples like Chiranjeevi’s Pratibandh and Nagarjuna’s Shiva from the 90s. However, he acknowledged that the trend has now become a lucrative opportunity for many filmmakers.
His observations hold weight, as several films that followed the Baahubali and KGF formula, such as Upendra’s Kabza and Vijay’s Puli, failed to impress audiences despite massive budgets. Even legendary director Mani Ratnam admitted that Baahubali inspired him to make his ambitious historical epic, Ponniyin Selvan.
Rajamouli’s brand and influence remain unmatched in Indian cinema. His upcoming Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj starrer is being made with a staggering ₹1,000 crore budget, reinforcing his stature as a visionary filmmaker who continues to push the boundaries of Indian cinema.
