Finally, almost an year after the death of ex Union Minister Shash Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar (Jan 18, 2014), Delhi police have registered her death as murder and a murder case was booked on Tuesday in the mysterious death of former union minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar. Police changed the case to murder based on her medical reports. The room where Sunanda Pushkar was found dead was revisited by police and forensic experts recently.
The suite had remained sealed and was opened for the first time since the incident. Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said the case has been registered based on medical reports from Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences received on December 29. He said the report stated that the “death was unnatural” and “due to poisoning”, either poisoned orally or poison injected. The officer said a viscera report is awaited.
Sunanda’s husband, Shashi Tharoor will soon be questioned in connection with the case, say reports. The AIIMS medical board had, in its second report submitted to police, confirmed poisoning as the reason behind her death but did not mention the type of poison that caused her death. They had listed some kind of poisons most of which were radioactive isotopes that cannot be detected by labs in India. According to a senior police official, police are now mulling sending the viscera samples to a UK-based laboratory, which has facilities to test all kinds of poisons.
Sunanda Pushkar was found dead at a five-star hotel in South Delhi on the night of January 17, a day after her twitter spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar over the latter’s alleged affair with Tharoor. The three mobile phones and a laptop of the deceased have already been sent to a forensic laboratory in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, for investigations to check whether anything was deleted from the gadgets post her death.
