Sunjay Kapur Estate Dispute Heats Up in Court

The inheritance dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estimated ₹30,000 crore estate reached the courts on Wednesday, as his widow Priya Kapur and his two children from a previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor clashed over the assets. Karisma’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, have challenged a will dated March 21, which reportedly left Sunjay’s entire personal estate to Priya. They claim the will was never mentioned before Sunjay’s sudden death during a polo match in England on June 12 and are seeking a one-fifth share each of the estate.

Samaira filed the petition through her mother, holding her power of attorney, while minor Kiaan is represented by Karisma as his legal guardian. Priya’s advocate, senior lawyer Rajiv Nayar, dismissed the suit as “not maintainable,” arguing that Priya was Sunjay’s lawfully wedded wife and that Karisma’s children had already received ₹1,900 crore in assets from the RK Family Trust.

The suit names Priya, her minor son, her mother-in-law Rani Kapur, and the alleged executor of the will, Shradha Suri Marwah, as defendants. Representing the children, advocate Mahesh Jethmalani alleged that Priya initially denied the will’s existence and delayed disclosure for over seven weeks. He also highlighted that Priya was appointed managing director of a company holding significant trust assets just a day after Sunjay’s funeral and claimed the will may have been “forged” and was not registered.

While Nayar stated that registration of wills is not mandatory under Indian law, the court expressed concern over the delay in providing a copy to the children. The bench directed Priya to submit a detailed list of all movable and immovable assets as of June 12. Replies are to be filed within two weeks, rejoinders a week thereafter, with the next hearing scheduled for October 9.
