The sudden demise of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, ex-husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, has triggered a series of legal and family disputes surrounding his ₹30,000 crore automotive empire, Sona Comstar.
Kapur passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2025, leaving behind a vast business legacy that is now at the center of mounting tensions. Though Karisma Kapoor has not made any public statement, reports suggest she is staking a claim to a portion of Sunjay’s assets, adding a new layer of controversy to an already complex situation.
The matter took a dramatic turn after Rani Kapur, Sunjay’s mother, issued a letter to Sona Comstar shareholders. In the letter, Rani claimed majority ownership of both the company and the family estate. She further alleged that certain individuals coerced her into signing over rights while she was in a vulnerable emotional state following her son’s death. The letter accused unnamed parties of exploiting her grief to gain control of the company.
Karisma and Sunjay were married in 2003 and divorced in 2016, following a highly publicized and contentious separation. During the divorce proceedings, Karisma accused Sunjay and his mother of domestic abuse, including disturbing allegations involving their honeymoon. In response, Sunjay countered that Karisma had married him solely for financial gain.
The couple share two children — Samaira and Kiaan — who remain in Karisma’s custody. As part of the divorce settlement, Karisma was granted a Mumbai property and investment bonds worth ₹14 crore each in the children’s names.
Despite this earlier settlement, her current legal interest in Sunjay’s estate has reignited scrutiny over his personal and professional legacy. With claims of coercion, emotional exploitation, and ownership disputes now surfacing, the future of Sona Comstar hangs in uncertainty as stakeholders brace for a prolonged battle over one of India’s largest automotive fortunes.
