Supreme Court Questions Govt Role in Karur Stampede Involving Vijay

The tragic Karur stampede involving Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay has emerged as one of the most significant political incidents in recent South Indian history. The unfortunate event claimed the lives of 41 people and drew widespread criticism towards Vijay and his party for their handling of the rally.

Earlier, the Madras High Court had strongly criticised Vijay, stating that the public rally was poorly planned and recklessly managed, placing the burden of consequences squarely on the attendees. The court’s comments appeared to hold Vijay and his party entirely responsible for the tragedy.

However, the Supreme Court has offered a contrasting perspective, providing some relief to Vijay and his party members. The apex court questioned the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to grant permission for Vijay’s TVK roadshow in Karur on September 27, noting that the state had previously denied permission for a similar event by the AIADMK.

The Supreme Court observed that the government’s role in approving the rally contributed to the circumstances that led to the stampede. This viewpoint shifts some accountability from Vijay and his party to the state authorities, providing a much-needed reprieve after the earlier High Court verdict.
