Suriya’s Box Office Struggles Continue After Kanguva Flop

Suriya, once a prominent star in the Telugu market with blockbusters like Ghajini, the Singam series, and 24, has been struggling to regain his past form in recent years. There was a time when even his average films would comfortably earn ₹10 crores in the Telugu states, with his top hits doing over ₹20 crore business. However, a string of flops has significantly affected his standing at the box office.

Hopes were high for Kanguva to mark Suriya’s grand comeback. The film generated immense pre-release buzz, with the producer ambitiously projecting it as a ₹2000 crore grosser. While that seemed like a stretch, it succeeded in creating hype across languages. Unfortunately, the film underperformed, managing to collect only around ₹100 crores in total, falling far short of expectations.

Prior to the release, Suriya was actively promoting Kanguva across India, including the Telugu-speaking regions. His enthusiasm was evident. But after the film’s lukewarm response, his subdued presence reflected the impact of the setback.

This failure is now casting a shadow over Retro, Suriya’s next release. With Hit 3 hitting screens around the same time, Retro is being seen as a second-choice option, especially in the Telugu states. Advance bookings for Retro are currently underwhelming, and unless the film receives exceptional word-of-mouth, it may struggle to recover its costs. At this stage, Retro appears more like a symbolic theatrical outing than a confident box-office contender.
