Tamannaah’s Mysore Sandal Ad Sparks Kannada Backlash

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia, fondly known as the “Milky Beauty,” has landed in the middle of a heated debate in Karnataka after being named the brand ambassador for Mysore Sandal soaps. The Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) signed the pan-India actress for a two-year deal reportedly worth ₹6.2 crores. While Tamannaah’s national recognition, especially from hits like Baahubali, is undisputed, her appointment hasn’t gone down well with a section of Kannada fans.

The core of the criticism isn’t aimed at Tamannaah personally, but rather at the symbolic significance of Mysore Sandal—a brand deeply rooted in Karnataka’s heritage. Many fans argue that a local Kannada star should have been chosen to represent a product so closely tied to the state’s cultural identity. They view the decision as a missed opportunity to highlight homegrown talent.

In response to the growing backlash, Karnataka Minister M.B. Patil defended the move, stating that Tamannaah was selected after careful consideration. He emphasized that the actress has strong visibility across multiple states and a solid track record in brand endorsements, making her an ideal face to expand Mysore Sandal’s reach nationally. Branding experts have also supported the choice, noting that Tamannaah’s widespread appeal could help elevate the brand to a broader market.

Though Tamannaah isn’t as frequent on the big screen as she once was, she remains active with select films like Odela 2 and several web series. This endorsement deal—while strategically aimed at growth—has revealed just how strongly Karnataka’s people feel about preserving their cultural icons, especially when it comes to something as regionally iconic as Mysore Sandal soap.
