The historic Waqf (Amendment) Bill is set to be presented in Parliament tomorrow by the ruling NDA alliance, with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) playing a key role in strengthening it. As an integral member of the NDA, TDP has issued a whip to its MPs, ensuring their presence and support for the bill during the session. The Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed to bring amendments to the Waqf Bill, has approved three out of the four key suggestions proposed by TDP, highlighting the party’s proactive approach in shaping the bill while keeping the interests of the Muslim community in consideration.
One of the key approved amendments states that properties already registered as Waqf by User cannot be reopened for reconsideration, ensuring that even if no official Waqf deed exists, such properties will continue to be recognized as Waqf assets. Another crucial change involves revising the authority of district collectors over Waqf-related matters, reducing their final say in such issues. Additionally, the deadline for submitting Waqf-related documents digitally has been extended by six months, providing more time for compliance.
While TDP has wholeheartedly supported the bill, it has also ensured that appropriate changes were made to safeguard the interests of the Muslim community. These crucial amendments, approved by the JAC, reinforce TDP’s commitment to inclusive governance. In contrast, YSR Congress (YCP) has openly opposed the bill but failed to propose any constructive amendments. Despite knowing that the bill is bound to pass, YCP did not take the opportunity to suggest changes in favor of the local Muslim community, a stance noted by political observers. This further showcases the difference in approach between TDP and YCP when it comes to addressing key legislative matters. As Parliament prepares for a historic session tomorrow, all eyes will be on the fate of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the role of TDP in shaping its outcome.
