Telangana ACB Moves to Prosecute K.T. Rama Rao in Formula E Case

Telangana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday submitted its report on the Formula E race case to the state government and requested sanction to prosecute former minister and BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar, and others.

The report comes after a nine-month-long investigation into alleged irregularities in hosting the Formula E race in Hyderabad during the previous BRS regime. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is accused of receiving Rs 44 crore through electoral bonds from a sponsoring company in exchange for granting rights to organize the race.

The ACB had filed a case in December last year against KTR, former Special Chief Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Arvind Kumar, and HMDA’s former Chief Engineer B.L.N. Reddy for alleged irregularities totaling Rs 54.88 crore in the Formula E deal. The FIR, lodged on a complaint by Principal Secretary M. Dana Kishore, alleged that foreign remittances were made without prior approval from regulatory authorities, causing an additional tax burden of Rs 8.06 crore to HMDA. The complaint also noted that the payments were made during the Model Code of Conduct for state Assembly elections without clearance from the Election Commission. The FIR cites the Prevention of Corruption Act and IPC Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Reacting to the development, K.T. Rama Rao termed the Formula E case as a “bogus case.” He challenged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to take a lie detector test alongside him. KTR emphasized that he had made every effort to bring the Formula E race to Hyderabad, acknowledging that he had directed the release of Rs 46 crore from the government, but clarified that all funds were deposited into the designated account. “Not a single rupee has been misused. Every rupee is accounted for. Where is the corruption then?” he questioned.

KTR further asserted that even if prosecution or charge-sheets proceeded, nothing would hold against him. He reaffirmed that the BRS would continue to focus on public issues, accusing the government of trying to divert attention from real concerns by raising the Formula E case. The leader also reminded the public of the incident where Revanth Reddy was caught on camera with Rs 50 lakh in currency notes.

KTR concluded by saying, “Let the people decide who is telling the truth. BRS will not be distracted and will continue to fight for the promises made to the public.”
