Telangana Is No 2 For Wrong Reason

The new state of Telangana might have been claiming as the wealthiest state in India with surplus budget. But what’s irony is that it also earned another distinction, albeit dubious. Going by the reports, Telangana is the second highest state in farmer suicides in the country while Maharashtra stands first. The successor state of Andhra Pradesh stands eight position in the suicides of farmers. This is not all.

Apart from farmer suicides, Telangana also recorded second highest suicide rate in the overall suicides. It’s only second to Sikkim in the overall suicides. According to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 9,623 persons committed suicide in 2014 in Telangana, with makes for a ‘suicide rate’ of 26.5. The national average for suicide rate stands at 10.6. Among the states, Telangana stands at number two in suicide rate, after Sikkim (38.4). However, UTs Puducherry (40.4) and Andaman & Nicobar (28.9) are higher up in the shameful list.

Most of the suicides in Telangana were due to illness (1,980), family problems (1,526), poverty (839), bankruptcy and indebtedness (419), marriage-related issues (227), unemployment (201), professional or career problems (163), love failure (138), addiction or drug abuse (119), failure in exams (97) and property disputes (13). When it comes to profession, the maximum suicides in Telangana were reported from the agriculture sector (1,347) followed by business (1,017), housewives (725) and students (353).
