In a landmark decision, the Telangana government has made Telugu a compulsory subject for students across all school boards, including CBSE, ICSE, IB, and others. The mandate applies to students from Classes 1 to 10, aiming to strengthen Telugu language skills among the state’s youth.
Previously, students in Classes 9 and 10 had the option to choose Telugu as an elective, but under the new directive, it will now be mandatory. For students up to Class 8, this rule will come into effect from the 2025-26 academic year, while for Classes 9 and 10, it will be implemented from 2026-27. Regular examinations will be conducted, and education department officials have been instructed to ensure proper supervision.
To facilitate learning, the government has introduced a specially curated Telugu textbook, Vennela, for Classes 9 and 10. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has approved the use of this Simple Telugu syllabus to make the language more accessible, particularly for students whose mother tongue is not Telugu. On Tuesday, School Education Department Secretary Dr. Yogita Rana issued an official memo regarding its adoption.
Education officials emphasized that this initiative is designed to help students develop essential reading and writing skills in Telugu. With over one-third of schools in Telangana being English-medium, the government aims to ensure that all students gain proficiency in the local language.
Additionally, the Director of School Education, Telangana, Hyderabad, has been directed to oversee the implementation of this policy. Officials noted that the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government had struggled to fully enforce the Telugu language mandate due to various challenges.
This initiative marks a significant step toward preserving and promoting Telugu in the state’s education system, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their linguistic and cultural heritage.
