Telugu Actresses Embrace Fierce Action Roles

In recent years, Telugu actresses have been stepping up their game in action roles, taking on fierce and merciless characters to rival the likes of Prabhas, Jr. NTR, and Allu Arjun. Anushka Shetty, known for her iconic roles, is now seen slitting a thug’s throat with a sickle in the trailer for Ghaati. Keerthy Suresh, on the other hand, has showcased her intense side with her brutal performances in Saani Kaayidham and Akka, proving that female stars are not just taking a back seat but are giving heroes a run for their money.

Producer M.S. Raju explains that these actresses are not necessarily competing with male action stars but rather exploring different roles that stray from their previous performances. He praises Anushka’s ability to take on dark, complex roles, noting that she is a versatile actor who can transition between genres with ease. From the supernatural thriller Arundhati to the lighter comic tone of Miss Shetty Mister Polishetty, Anushka has consistently impressed audiences with her range. He compares her to Vijayashanthi, who set high standards for women-centric films and action-packed roles in the industry.

Raju also commends Keerthy Suresh for diversifying her portfolio with roles that highlight her fiery side. Having already portrayed a grey character in Mahanati, Keerthy continues to expand her fan base by embracing intense roles in Saani Kaayidham and Akka. Meanwhile, other actresses like Nayanthara are also stepping into fierce roles, with her upcoming film Rakkayie showcasing her anger-driven character that promises to leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

While some actresses are taking on responsible roles as police officers and RAW agents—such as Samantha in Citadel, Anupama Parameswaran in Tillu Square, and Kajal Aggarwal in Satyabhama—the journey to becoming full-fledged action heroines is a gradual process that requires careful selection of scripts and a lot of hard work.

Director Hemanth Madhukar, who trained Anjali for her role as a New York cop in Nishabdham, shares his thoughts on the trend. He believes that actresses are eager to explore different roles beyond their usual glam or bubbly characters. “Once in a while, they get an opportunity to wield guns, and they are giving their best to showcase their fiery sides,” Madhukar explains. He notes that it’s a challenge for actresses to step into action-packed roles, but they’re more than ready to embrace their power and impress audiences with their tough personas.

Overall, while the journey of actresses becoming action icons may take time, it’s clear that they are carving out a space for themselves in the action genre, leaving audiences excited for more.
