When a mid-range Indian smart phone maker decides to give tough competition to the world’s high-end smart phones, the result is YUtopia. Loaded with innovative software as well as hardware features, this is a flagship device from Micromax’s Cyanogen-powered stables. Powered by a 64-Bit Snapdragon processor with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage, the YUtopia is no less powered than a fully functional laptop. It is an ideal device for multitaskers. With dual (micro and nano) 4G SIM slots (the nano slot doubles as micro SD card slot), it runs on Cynogen OS 12.1, an Open Source operating system based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.
The 5.2 inch Sharp WQHD IPS display (2560 x1440 pixels) produces crisp and clear images. Design wise, Yutopia is thin, light, and classy. It features an aluminum body with pure black touch panel. With 7.2 mm thickness, this device won’t feel bulky and you can easily operate it with one hand. One of the striking features of this phone is the huge primary camera resolution, 21 megapixels with a Sony Exmor sensor and other standard features like optical image stabilisation, dual tone flash, HDR. We took a few shots and got impressive pictures which were clear, without any blurring, even after zooming it to 8x.
The 8 megapixels selfie camera also got us decent pictures. It comes with a wide field of view, making it easier to take groupies. The finger print scanner, just below the rear camera lens, lets you unlock the phone as well as take selfies with a single tap. But it is quite a hassle to set up the scanner, as you need to tap on it multiple times to recognise your finger print initially.
YU has also launched ‘AroundYU’, a platform of integrated suite of app services. Instead of downloading separate applications for shopping or travel, AroundYU integrates multiple apps under categories like food, shopping, etc., and lets you compare prices and other information. Compared to other high-end devices with similar specs, we feel YUtopia is reasonably priced at `24,999. It is available on Amazon.
